SOCIAL EVENTS
At each of the general meetings there is an opportunity to socialize and chat about our favourite topic,
gardening. Many members come early as the doors open at 6:30 and there’s always lots to see and do.
For the break; coffee, tea and goodies are brought in by various members and sold for 50 cents.
We supply styrofoam cups at an additional 50 cents but members are encouraged to bring their own cups
to the meetings as we are meant to be good stewards of the earth. First time new members and visitors
are offered the use of a one-time complimentary mug.
During the year members sign up to assist the main kitchen volunteers or to bring in some treats for the
refreshment table. The sign-up sheet is circulated at the meetings on a regular basis.
Throughout the warm weather members are invited to open their gardens to the membership. Frequently a
potluck is arranged for the end of an open gardens day.
Twice a year we have our main social evenings. The August picnic is held on the second Wednesday of
the month. Starting at 5:00 p.m.; it is at Bowen Park picnic shelter just off Wall Street. Usually the
club provides a main course of cold cut platters and buns as well as beverages, and members are invited to
bring a salad or dessert. The welly wanging competition is the highlight of the evening.
The Christmas Dinner party is on the December meeting evening at 5:00 p.m. It is held at our regular
venue and a buffet is set up for the group dinner. The club provides punch, buns and a main course.
Members are asked to bring vegetables, starchy side dishes, main course dishes and desserts. This is
an evening of great fun with award presentations, prizes, a visit from Santa, singing and games. Last
year’s presentation by the NHS executive will be hard to beat.
